BACKGROUND / PROBLEM:
The City is rewriting the Atlanta Tree Ordinance which will not be revised again for another decade. In early February of 2021 The City Planning Department released its proposed Tree Protection Ordinance draft. The Planning Dept’s draft fails yet again to protect Atlanta’s trees! Further, it destroys the appeals process and does nothing to reduce clear-cutting and mass grading on large properties.
SOLUTION:
Tell City Council to:
Adopt the “Citizens Blended Draft”
The Citizens Group is a coalition of Atlanta architects, builders, arborists, conservationists, and members of the Tree Conservation Commission. The coalition has spent months working with the City and other professionals to create the “Citizens Group Blended Draft” which fixes major problems with the Planning Department’s Tree Ordinance draft and retains the parts that are working. It closes loopholes, addresses equity, and simplifies the ordinance with solutions that will protect our urban tree canopy and benefit Atlanta citizens as well as builders. It includes effective enforcement measures and is fair and balanced – including innovative ways to protect trees while our city grows.
We have prepared a comparison chart that clearly outlines how the Citizens Blended Draft differs from the City Planning Department’s latest draft. Check it out!
